23
17 He got into a boat and his disciples followed him.
Suddenly a violent storm 18 came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep.
They came and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! 19 We are perishing!"
He said to them, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?"
20 Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.
The men were amazed and said, "What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?" (Matthew 8: 23 – 27)
Jesus calls the disciples who are with him in the boat "men of little faith." They had enough faith to go to him for help; what did they lack?
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not;
In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.
The disciples relied on their own perception of the event. They did not acknowledge His power and presence.
Complete trust in God implies absolute surrender to His divine Providence, that is, accepting unconditionally His will in every situation.
