THE MEMORIAL OF A SUPERSTAR: ST JEROME. PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH.

THE MEMORIAL OF ST JEROME. PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH.

"One day, when the angels of God came to present themselves before the LORD,

“Satan also came among them.

"And the LORD said to Satan, "Whence do you come?"

“Then Satan answered the LORD and said,

"From roaming the earth and patrolling it."

And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?"

"But Satan answered the LORD and said,

"Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing?

“Have you not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with your protection?

“You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock are spread over the land.

“But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face."

"And the LORD said to Satan,

"Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand upon his person."

"So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

"And so one day, while his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, a messenger came to Job and said,

"The oxen were ploughing and the asses grazing beside them, and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid.

“They put the herdsmen to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

"While he was yet speaking, another came and said,

"Lightning has fallen from heaven and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you."

"While he was yet speaking, another messenger came and said,

"The Chaldeans formed three columns, seized the camels, carried them off, and put those tending them to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

"While he was yet speaking, another came and said,

"Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, when suddenly a great wind came across the desert and smote the four corners of the house.

“It fell upon the young people and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you."

"Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair.

“He cast himself prostrate upon the ground, and said,

"Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again.

“The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!"

"In all this Job did not sin, nor did he say anything disrespectful of God." (Job 1: 6 - 22).

Monday 30th September 2024 of the 26th Week in Ordinary Time is the feast of St Jerome (342 - 420).

St Jerome was born in Dalmatia in former Yugoslavia. He is a Priest, Doctor of the Church.

Jerome translated the Bible into the Latin Vulgate, which became the official version of the Bible for the Church for over 1000 years.

The Entrance Antiphon from the Mass of his feast summarizes his life and his work:

"Blessed indeed is he who ponders the law of the Lord day and night:

he will yield his fruit in due season." (Cf Psalm 1: 1 - 2. Entrance Antiphon on the Feast of St Jerome).

We choose the first Reading from Job1: 6 - 22 to chew and digest. It is a long reading but trust the Holy Spirit and the Church for offering this to us.

"He who has ears let him listen."

Here is the blessed fruit I reaped from the Book of Job:

"Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again.

The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!" (Job 1: 6).

The wisdom contained in the above Scripture has brought me peace again and again for many years. I rephrase it thus and post it all over my work station:

"JESUS GAVE ME EVERYTHING I HAVE. HE MAY TAKE ANY OR ALL WHENEVER HE WANTS."

Back to our great Saint of today:

I am delighted to share these quotes from St Jerome:

+  "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ."

+ "As often as the world’s vain ambition delights you, as often as you see in mundane affairs something that vaunts itself, transport yourself in your thoughts to paradise: begin to be what you shall be. And you shall hear from your Bridegroom: Put me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm."

Lord, help us to follow the example of St Jerome in reflecting on Your word day and night. May Your word prepare us to offer You a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving always and everywhere. Amen.

September 30. End of September. The Church honors the Sorrowful Heart of today September 30. May the Most Sorrowful Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary obtain for us peace and serenity and prosperity.

Amen.
