What are we going to do about this man?

“What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs."  (John 11: 47).

The works or signs performed by Jesus are proofs that He comes from God.  (John 10: 38). But the leadership of the Jewish people appears to see it differently.  The high priest Caiaphas quickly discerned the significance of the moment and made a dramatic prophecy.

“You know nothing,  nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish.”   (John 11: 49 - 50).

Caiaphas "prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,  and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God."  (John 11: 51 - 52).

This is in accordance with the ordained will of God.  We can apply the words of Isaiah on the powerful providence of God to this event:
"You planned them long ago, and now you have accomplished them, just as you said!"  (Isaiah 25: 1).

"O Lord, do not stay afar off;
my strength, make haste to help me!
For I am a worm and no man,
scorned by everyone, despised by the people."  (Psalm 22:  20, 7).
