Feast of St Padre Pio, the Man of truth.

"Two things I ask of you, do not deny them to me before I die: Put falsehood and lying far from me."
(Proverbs 30: 7 - 8).

Wednesday 23rd September 2020, 25th Week in Ordinary Time is the feast of St Pio Pietrechina better known as Padre Pio. (1887 - 1968). Italian Capuchin Priest. Stigmatist. A highly gifted confessor and counseling guru. Padre Pio died and was canonized in the lifetime of many people reading this Blog.

The Bible indicts falsehood and lies more than perhaps it indicts fornication and adultery, the principal causes of abortion. Our key Scripture for today puts it starkly: "Put falsehood and lying far from me."

Why is lying so hateful to the Almighty? Because the enemy of mankind is the Father of lies. He has  been a Liar from the very beginning. It is disconcerting and most distressing to witness lies after lies told on public media. Many times by old men and women who went to Ivy League institutions and hold responsible positions in government, academia and society. They live for the moment and do not care about divine retribution or their legacy. Like King Jeroboam of Israel who sinned and led Israel to sin, they will pay dearly for their sins.

The Eight Commandment is all about dishonest Speech:

#8.    You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Have you lied?  Have you gossiped?  Have you ever spoken behind someone else's back?  Are you sincere in your dealing  with what concerns others?  Are you critical, negative or uncharitable in your thoughts of others?  Do you keep secret what should be kept confidential?  Do you expose the faults of others?

Almighty Father, have mercy on us. Put falsehood and lying far from us. We ask for this in Jesus Name. Amen.

  1. What do you mean by your statement that the Bible indicates lying perhaps more than fornication and adultery, the principal causes of abortion? Are you subjugating abortion to lying? You shall not kill is the 5th Commandment. Abortion is intrinsically evil because it is the murder of the innocent. Not because it is the result of fornication. The US Bishops identified the threat of abortion as the preeminent issue because it has killed approximately 60 million babies. You may be spreading falsehoods and deceit. Please remove this comparison.

  2. Do you agree that fornication and adultery are the principal causes of abortion? I am not saying that abortion is not intrinsically evil. I am saying that the Bible says that God hates lies. Your quarrel is with the Bible not me.
Why are you not zealous in stopping fornication and adultery in society and see if it could have an impact on the rate of abortion? No pregnancy, no abortion.

    1. I do not know if fornication and adultery are the principal causes of abortion. Married women kill their unborn children from their husband too. You have not provided any facts to back up your claim. My quarrel is not with the Bible. It is with your presentation. I agree that God commanded us not to lie. But your comparison of lying to acts that may lead abortion implies that lying is the greater sin. And that is not true. You say that God mentions lying more than fornication or adultery, which lead to abortion, so he must hate lying more (implying he hates abortion less). And your statement about fornication and adultery and leading to abortion are unnecessary to your point about lying. God hates lying... leave it at that. The Catholic Church estimates 60 million babies have been killed in abortion. Do you really want to imply that gossiping is worse than abortion?

  3. Since you have not answered the question below, I do not see any benefit in continuing the conversation. Let us agree to continue to pray for the Church which we love so much and for one another. 🙏⛪

  4. Abortion is built on lies that is why Satan is called the father of lies and a murderer from the beginning. That is the connection. All sin is built on lies.

  5. Thank you Kathy. True talk. What a wonderful insight.

  6. I believe it compares the lying because women seeking an abortion are often lied to about the abortion by believing this is their only option, or this is really not a baby, but just a lump of tissue. The abortionist is spreading the falsehood and deceit.

  7. Thank you for your thoughtful response. You are right about the lies of the abortionists. My experience is that both sides of the debate err from time to time on truth and charity.

Consider this scenario: Catholic moms and dads do their Christian duty to their offsprings by educating them at home on chastity and purity. This will be complimented by catechesis in the Church and pulpit preaching. The young people grow up as responsible Catholic young women and men. This could affect may be 25% of the population. That will be a good start. What do you think of this approach?
