Feast of St John Mary Vianney.
"Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue.
"They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son?
"Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us?
"Where did this man get all this?”
"And they took offense at him.
"But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.”
"And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith." (Matthew 13: 54 - 58).
Friday 4th August 2023 in the 17th Week of Ordinary Time is the feast day of the patron saint of parish priests, the Curé of Ars, St John Mary Vianney (1786 - 1859). French.
What do you expect from your parish priest?
#1 Celebrate Mass with reverence and devotion.
#2 Always be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and be the face of the loving mercy of Jesus Christ.
#3 Assist the poor as best as they can.
#4. Be ready and available to assist you at the moment of death.
St John of Vianney set an excellent example as a parish priest. The Church noticed and made him the Patron Saint of Parish Priests.
St John Vianney said à propos the role of the priests in the mystery of salvation:
"Without the priest, the passion and death of our Lord would be of no avail.... What use would be a house filled with gold, were there no one to open its door?” John opened the door to the merciful love of Jesus to sinners through the Sacrament of Reconciliation where he spent hours upon hours every day.
St John Mary Vianney came from the poor class. This did not make life easy for him in the seminary or initially in his priestly ministry.
In our Gospel today from Matthew 13: 54 - 58, the people who listened to Jesus in the Synagogue were put off because Jesus did not come from a prestigious background. St John Vianney was not deterred from his priestly calling because of what people thought of him. We know that Jesus fulfilled His ministry of teaching, healing and feeding people regardless of public opinion.
Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the life. Follow Him.
