Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary.

Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary.

Jesus chooses the Twelve.

"Jesus departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.

"When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles:

"Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

"And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured.

"Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all." (6: 12 - 19).

Tuesday September 12th  2023 in the 23rd Week of Ordinary Time is the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary.

Almost back to back on the celebration of the Birthday of Mary (September 8th) is the feast of her Most Holy Name. The Church in her teaching authority interpretes for us the role of Mary in the economy of salvation. Here is what the Church teaches about the feast of today, the Most Holy Name of Mary:

"God the Father is glorified by the exalted role in salvation of the Blessed Virgin Mary." Thus her name is a name of honor, to be venerated and called upon with filial trust and devotion." (Roman Missal).

The Blessed Pope Innocent XI placed the feast in the liturgical calendar in thanksgiving for the victory of Christians over Moslems on September 12, 1683.

Our Gospel today deals with the Choice and the Call of the Twelve. "The gift and the call of God are irrevocable." (Romans 11: 29).

This great promise of God is also true for Judas Iscariot who unfortunately revoked his gift and call to be an Apostle by betraying Jesus.

We celebrate today the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. Mary was chosen, called and anointed to be the Mother of God.

Some Christians think we exaggerate the honor we give to Mary? Here are a few questions for them:

If "God the Father is glorified by the exalted role in salvation of the Blessed Virgin Mary," how about we poor sinners? It is pure arrogance and insanity to deny the Blessed Virgin Mary her honor and privileges.

Are you greater than God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit? Are you greater than the Magisterium of the Church that has taught the honors and privileges of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Doctrine of Faith? Are you superior to all the Doctors of the Church?

Let us thank the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who in His mercy gave us the Mother of His Son Jesus Christ to be our Mother.

In September, the Church honors the Sorrowful Heart of Mary. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows obtain for us  mercies from her Son Jesus.
