MEMORIAL OF ST KATERI TEKEWITHA, VIRGIN.
"Jesus said to his Apostles:
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword.
For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s enemies will be those of his household.
“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man’s reward.
And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”
When Jesus finished giving these commands to his Twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns." (Matthew 10: 34 - 11-1).
Monday July 14th in the 15th week in Ordinary Time. The Church commemorates the life of St Kateri Tekakwita, fondly called the Lily of the Mohawks.
St Kateri Tekakwita (1656 - 1680). Born near New York. Daughter of a Mohawk chief. Kateri died at the age of 24. She had great devotion to the Eucharist and Jesus Crucified. She is known as the "Lily of the Mohawks" and is the patron saint of ecologists, environmentalists, and Native Americans.
I love this quote of St Kateri Tekewitha:
"WHO WILL TEACH ME WHAT IS MOST PLEASING TO GOD, THAT I MAY DO IT." (ST KATERI TEKAKWITA, LILY OF THE MOHAWKS).
Are you shocked by the words of Jesus in today's Gospel?
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword."
Scripture tells us that Jesus is not just the Prince of Peace but Peace Himself. Yet the Prince of Peace tells us that He came to bring the sword. This statement was made to the Apostles before their missionary journey. The statement is to underline the reality that missionary work is not a vacation in Monte Casino. It is very serious business. St Kateri Tekewitha fought many spiritual battles before she landed on the Altar.
The Kingdom of God belongs to those who are prepared to fight and seize it by force. (Cf Matthew 11: 12).
"Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness."
Challenges to the commitment of making the Kingdom of God first priority will come from families, friends, companies, governments, etc. The Christian must be prepared to draw his sword to fight the good fight.
“He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” (Matthew 12: 30).
The Church honors the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ in July.
“Precious Blood, ocean of divine mercy: Flow upon us! Precious Blood, most pure offering: Procure us every grace! Precious Blood, hope and refuge of sinners: Atone for us!" (St Catherine of Siena).
Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ purify and heal us.
