Feast of St Edmund Campion, SJ. Priest and Martyr.
"Jesus told his disciples a parable.
“Consider the fig tree and all the other trees. When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near;
"In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near.
"Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Luke 21: 29 - 33).
Friday 1st December of 2023 of the 34th Week of Ordinary Time is the feast of St Edmund Campion of the Society of Jesus.
Born January 25th, 1540 in London. He became a junior fellow at Oxford University at 17. Confused by the adulation his intellectual prowess attracted, Edmund abandoned his Catholic roots and became an Anglican, even a deacon in the Anglican church. He soon saw the true light. He went to Rome and studied for the priesthood in the Society of Jesus.
After ordination, Edmund returned to England secretly and ministered to Catholics. He was betrayed by one of his flock and tried and condemned to be hanged, drawn and quartered in Tyburn, London on December 1st, 1581.
St Edmund Campion could have chosen to remain a Fellow at Oxford University and enjoy the high life to the fullest. But he believed in the promises of Jesus. "There is something more." St Edmund Campion is the most famous of the English Catholic martyrs. He is acclaimed universally as a great poet.
Our key Scripture instructs us to know the Times and the Seasons.
"There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.
"A time to give birth, and a time to die;
"a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.
"A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build.
"A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
"A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them;
"a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.
"A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away.
"A time to rend, and a time to sew;
"a time to be silent, and a time to speak.
"A time to love, and a time to hate;
"a time of war, and a time of peace." (Ecclesiastes 3: 1 - 8).
