REFRESH US LORD WITH THE LIVING WATER.

GIVE ME THE LIVING WATER.

THE GOSPEL:

John 4:5-42

Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar,

near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

Jacob’s well was there.

Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well.

It was about noon.

A woman of Samaria came to draw water.

Jesus said to her,

“Give me a drink.”

His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.

The Samaritan woman said to him,

“How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?”

—For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.—

Jesus answered and said to her,

“If you knew the gift of God

and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink, ‘

you would have asked him

and he would have given you living water.”

The woman said to him,

“Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep;

where then can you get this living water?

Are you greater than our father Jacob,

who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself

with his children and his flocks?”

Jesus answered and said to her,

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;

but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst;

the water I shall give will become in him

a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

The woman said to him,

“Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty

or have to keep coming here to draw water.”

Jesus said to her,

“Go call your husband and come back.”

The woman answered and said to him,

“I do not have a husband.”

Jesus answered her,

“You are right in saying, ‘I do not have a husband.’

For you have had five husbands,

and the one you have now is not your husband.

What you have said is true.”

The woman said to him,

“Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.

Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain;

but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”

Jesus said to her,

“Believe me, woman, the hour is coming

when you will worship the Father

neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

You people worship what you do not understand;

we worship what we understand,

because salvation is from the Jews.

But the hour is coming, and is now here,

when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth;

and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.

God is Spirit, and those who worship him

must worship in Spirit and truth.”

The woman said to him,

“I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ;

when he comes, he will tell us everything.”

Jesus said to her,

“I am he, the one speaking with you.”

At that moment his disciples returned,

and were amazed that he was talking with a woman,

but still no one said, “What are you looking for?”

or “Why are you talking with her?”

The woman left her water jar

and went into the town and said to the people,

“Come see a man who told me everything I have done.

Could he possibly be the Christ?”

They went out of the town and came to him.

Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat.”

But he said to them,

“I have food to eat of which you do not know.”

So the disciples said to one another,

“Could someone have brought him something to eat?”

Jesus said to them,

“My food is to do the will of the one who sent me

and to finish his work.

Do you not say, ‘In four months the harvest will be here’?

I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.

The reaper is already receiving payment

and gathering crops for eternal life,

so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.

For here the saying is verified that ‘One sows and another reaps.’

I sent you to reap what you have not worked for;

others have done the work,

and you are sharing the fruits of their work.”

Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him

because of the word of the woman who testified,

“He told me everything I have done.”

When the Samaritans came to him,

they invited him to stay with them;

and he stayed there two days.

Many more began to believe in him because of his word,

and they said to the woman,

“We no longer believe because of your word;

for we have heard for ourselves,

and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.” (John 4: 5 - 42).

Sunday 23rd March 2025 is the 3rd Sunday in Lent.

Our reflection comes from the story of the Samaritan Woman. Jesus and the Samaritan woman talked about water near Jacob’s Well. At first, the woman thought Jesus was talking of ordinary water. Water in the Bible symbolizes the Holy Spirit.

The theme of this Sunday is the big "Gift of God", the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the Lord and Giver of life. He is the Abundant life promised by Jesus in John 10: 10. He is also called the Spirit of God, Spirit of Truth, Paraclete, Counselor, Advocate, and Comforter, The Promise of Father.

Last week, we read and reflected on the Story of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Peter, James and John experienced the splendor of the transfigured Jesus on Mount Tabor. This experience big as it is was, did not give them a robust faith in Jesus as the Messiah who must suffer death and rise from the dead. What was the missing ingredient?

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1: 8).

On Pentecost Sunday, the "Promise of the Father" was delivered to the disciples gathered in the Upper Room. The Holy Spirit was the game changer. He descended on the disciples with His 7 gifts:

Wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. The disciples received too the fruits of the Holy Spirit which transformed their character. These fruits are:

Charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control and chastity.

You see the gifts in action every day in Christians. Jesus promises that by these characteristics people will know that we are Christians.

Lord Jesus, Word of God give me the living water, so that I may never get thirsty.

St Joseph is the man chosen by God to be the foster father and guardian of Jesus.

THE PRODIGAL AND THE MERCIFUL LOVE OF THE FATHER.

THE PRODIGAL SON RETURNS HOME.

"Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

"So to them Jesus addressed this parable. “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them.

"After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.

"When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any.

"Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger.

"I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’

"So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.’

"But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly, bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’

"Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

"He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’

"He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’” (Luke15:1-3, 11-32).

Saturday 22nd March 2025 in the 2nd Week in Lent.

I see God’s face of mercy in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The Mass Scriptures for this Saturday proclaims the Father’s merciful love.

The first Reading from Micah 7 shouts: Show us your wonderful signs of mercy again.

I claim a lot of promises from the Responsorial Psalm 103:

The Lord is kind and merciful.

"Bless the Lord, O my soul;

and all my being, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,

and forget not all his benefits. R/

He pardons all your iniquities,

he heals all your ills.

He redeems your life from destruction,

he crowns you with kindness and compassion. R/

He will not always chide,

nor does he keep his wrath forever.

Not according to our sins does he deal with us,

nor does he requite us according to our crimes. R/

For as the heavens are high above the earth,

so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.

As far as the east is from the west,

so far has he put our transgressions from us. R/"

The Gospel is the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

This divine Message from Jesus our Teacher sounds too good to be true that God our Father will pursue us with His merciful love to bring us home even when we are incorrigible but it is true.

How can I say this with certainty?

Look at the Liturgical Scriptures of today.

Look at the Tradition of the Church:

The Conversion of St Paul, Saints Francis of Asissi, Ignatius Loyola, John of God, Mary Magdalene, etc.

Faith comes through hearing. Hearing the word and testimonies of Sacred Scripture and believing them.

"I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.  I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers." (Luke 15: 18 - 19).

The Scriptures reveal to us in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus Christ as the Face of mercy of God the Father. How do we apply this truth to our needs?

The ABC of Mercy:

Ask for Mercy.

Be Merciful.

Completely trust Jesus for Mercy.

St Joseph is the man chosen by God to be the foster father and guardian of Jesus.

Joseph is a man of high purity and chastity. God chose him to be the husband of Mary because God had fitted him with the appropriate graces to protect the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Church considers St Joseph the greatest Saint after the Blessed Virgin Mary. Joseph is so fittingly named the Patron of the Universal Church.  Remember that he was the Guardian of Jesus and in his intercessory role, you can believe that Jesus will deny nothing to Joseph.

JOSEPH OF EGYPT AND JESUS OF NAZARETH.

JOSEPH, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT IS A TYPE OF JESUS.

THE GOOD NEWS:

"Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons, for he was the child of his old age; and he had made him a long tunic. When his brothers saw that their father loved him best of all his sons, they hated him so much that they would not even greet him.

One day, when his brothers had gone to pasture their father’s flocks at Shechem, Israel said to Joseph, “Your brothers, you know, are tending our flocks at Shechem. Get ready; I will send you to them.”

So Joseph went after his brothers and caught up with them in Dothan. They noticed him from a distance, and before he came up to them, they plotted to kill him. They said to one another: “Here comes that master dreamer! Come on, let us kill him and throw him into one of the cisterns here; we could say that a wild beast devoured him. We shall then see what comes of his dreams.”

When Reuben heard this, he tried to save him from their hands, saying, “We must not take his life. Instead of shedding blood,” he continued, “just throw him into that cistern there in the desert; but do not kill him outright.” His purpose was to rescue him from their hands and return him to his father. So when Joseph came up to them, they stripped him of the long tunic he had on; then they took him and threw him into the cistern, which was empty and dry.

They then sat down to their meal. Looking up, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, their camels laden with gum, balm and resin to be taken down to Egypt. Judah said to his brothers: “What is to be gained by killing our brother and concealing his blood? Rather, let us sell him to these Ishmaelites, instead of doing away with him ourselves. After all, he is our brother, our own flesh.” His brothers agreed. They sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver." (Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a).

Friday March 21st 2025 in the 2nd Week in Lent.

On Day 17 of 40 of Lent 2025, the word of God reminds us through the story of Joseph and his brothers the narrative of Cain and Abel which we saw in mid February.  "Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him."  (Genesis 4: 8).

The motives for the present crime are similar to that of the murder of Abel:

#1.  Jealousy, envy, anger, hatred.

#2.  Spirit of disobedience.

#3.  No fear of God or dread of retribution for the crime.

Etc, etc.

Consider the consequences of the sin:

Murder, fratricide, racism, war.

The brothers of Joseph sold him to traders en route to Egypt for 20 pieces of silver.  Both Abel and Joseph are types of Jesus.  As we approach the great feast of Easter, watch out for other types of Jesus.

"When the LORD called down a famine on the land and ruined the crop that sustained them,

He sent a man before them,

Joseph, sold as a slave.

They had weighed him down with fetters, and he was bound with chains, till his prediction came to pass and the word of the LORD proved him true."  (Psalm 105: 16 - 18 RM).

Psalm 105 tells us of the mighty, merciful and mysterious Providence of God. God writes straight with crooked lines. God is the supreme Master of time and events. God would never have permitted evil to have the last laugh. He permitted the brothers of Joseph to sell him into slavery in order to arrange the migration of Jacob and his family to Egypt.

God allowed Jesus Christ to be crucified and die in order to accomplish His Resurrection and proclaim the resurrection of the Body and life everlasting.

Remember the marvels the Lord has done. Always!

Joseph is the Terror of Demons. Ask Joseph to protect you and your family from mean demonic attacks.

St Joseph is the man chosen by God to be the foster father and guardian of Jesus.

Memorare to St. Joseph

Remember, O most chaste spouse of the Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who implored your help and sought your intercession were left unassisted. Full of confidence in your power I fly unto you and beg your protection. Despise not O Guardian of the Redeemer my humble supplication, but in your bounty, hear and answer me. Amen.

YOU WILL BE TRULY HAPPY WHEN YOU PUT ALL YOUR TRUST IN GOD.

BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO TRUST IN THE LORD.

THE WORD OF GOD:

"Thus says the LORD:

Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings,

who seeks his strength in flesh,

whose heart turns away from the LORD.

"He is like a barren bush in the desert

that enjoys no change of season,

But stands in a lava waste,

a salt and empty earth.

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,

whose hope is the LORD.

He is like a tree planted beside the waters

that stretches out its roots to the stream:

"It fears not the heat when it comes,

its leaves stay green;

In the year of drought it shows no distress,

but still bears fruit.

"More tortuous than all else is the human heart,

beyond remedy; who can understand it?

"I, the LORD, alone probe the mind

and test the heart,

To reward everyone according to his ways,

according to the merit of his deeds." (Jeremiah 17: 5 - 10).

Thursday 20th March 2025 in the 2nd Week in Lent.

The word of God today from Jeremiah 17: 5 - 10 is exceedingly sweet.

"If you find your delight in the Lord, he will grant your heart’s desire." (Psalm 37: 4).

How do we find our delight in the Lord? 3 steps below for peace and contentment in life.

1. Immerse yourself in the word of God.

2. Live the 7-Way Plan.

+ Daily Prayer.

+ Daily Bible.

+ Frequent Holy Communion.

+ Frequent Confession.

+ Daily Examination of Conscience.

+ Sharing your faith.

+ Daily Spiritual Reading.

It is not difficult to form the habit of living the 7-Way Plan. If you develop the habit, you will be blessed by God.

3. Wait for the Lord with patience.

I heard the following words from Jesus speaking through the priest at the noon Mass just before Holy Communion: "Blessed are you who are invited to the Supper of the Lord." I knew the Lord was speaking to me and everyone who was at the noon Mass. I walked out of the Sanctuary repeating to myself: "Jesus said that I am blessed. Yes! I am who and what Jesus says I am."

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,

whose hope is the LORD.

He is like a tree planted beside the waters

that stretches out its roots to the stream."

Be the tree planted in the Sanctuary of the Lord. You will be nourished daily by the word of God and the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

Ask St Joseph who is the Terror of Demons to protect you from the spirit of putting your trust in people rather than God.

St Joseph is the man chosen by God to be the foster father and guardian of Jesus.

THE SOLEMNITY OF ST JOSEPH, THE HOLY SPOUSE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.

SOLEMNITY OF ST JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY.

THE GOOD NEWS:

"Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.

"Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.

"Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.

"Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

"When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home."  (Matthew1:16, 18-21, 24a).

Wednesday 19th March 2025 in the 2nd Week in Lent is Solemnity of St Joseph , the holy Spouse of the Immaculate Virgin.

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her." (Matthew 1: 20).

Here is what we know about Joseph:

#1. Joseph is from the royal line of David.

#2. A carpenter by trade and a man of humble means.

#3. He is a just and honest man.

#4. Because it was not good for a woman with child to be alone, God chose Joseph to provide for Mary and Jesus; to protect them and to be foster father to Jesus and raise Him up in virtue and manly manners.

Joseph excelled in all the roles that Divine Providence entrusted to him.

Joseph is the patron saint of the Church and a powerful intercessor for the Church and us all. He is also the patron saint of a happy death.

"Let My priests be fathers! Let them beg Me for the grace of spiritual fatherhood, and I will give it to them in abundance. Such a man was Saint Joseph. He was the living image of My Father, and he was chosen by My Father to be a father to Me in My sacred humanity. Let My priests go to Saint Joseph. He will obtain for them this priceless gift of spiritual fatherhood, and he will guide them in the delicate and difficult work of being true fathers to souls." (Friday, November 15, 2013).

FEAST OF ST CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA, BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH.

FEAST OF ST CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA, BISHOP AND DOCTOR.

You have one Teacher & Master: Jesus

THE GOSPEL:

"Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,

“The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example.

For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘Rabbi.’

As for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi.’ You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called ‘Master’; you have but one master, the Christ.

The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23: 1 - 12).

Tuesday 18th March 2025 is the feast of St Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

St Cyril of Alexandria in Egypt lived between 376 and 444. St Cyril played a crucial role in the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD to defend the oneness of the person in Jesus Christ. Today we take for granted the knowledge that Jesus Christ is true God and true Man. This has not always been the case in Church history. St Cyril argued that if Jesus is One Person, then the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of God (Theotokos).

St Cyril listened to the words of Christ, meditated long on them.  During the crisis of faith that engulfed Christiandom in the middle of the 5th century, Cyril did not collapse from the virulent and battering attacks of heretics. His house "had been set solidly on rock."

In our key Scripture for today, Jesus upbraided the scribes and the Pharisees. Why? They teach correct Doctrine but leave the practice of what they teach to their followers.

Who are the equivalent of the scribes and Pharisees today?

They are the Bishops and Abbots who receive teaching authority directly from Christ. They have helpers in priests, theologians and catechists.

Church Father and Doctor of the Church St John Chrysostom teaches that the Bishops and their assistants must be respected because they hold apostolic office no matter their failings.

We may think that a Bishop is in error with regard to one doctrine or the other. But who are we to criticize him when his Boss, Jesus says:

"Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” (Luke 10: 16).

All things success and failure work together for good to those who love God. God makes everything beautiful in the fullness of time. Trust in the merciful, mighty and mysterious Plan of God.

We all will be judged on the Last Day by our love, obedience and humility.

Jesus concludes His teaching for today with these words:

"The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23: 11 - 12).

WEDNESDAY MARCH 19 IS THE SOLEMNITY OF ST JOSEPH. Honor St Joseph on his feast day with Holy Mass and Holy Communion.

Act of Consecration to St. Joseph

O dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to your honor and give myself to you, that you may always be my father, my protector and my guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me a greater purity of heart and fervent love of the interior life. After your example may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me, that I may share in the peace and joy of your holy death. Amen

Saint Joseph, pray for us.

FEAST OF ST PATRICK, BISHOP AND MISSIONARY.

FEAST OF ST PATRICK, BISHOP AND MISSIONARY.

BE MERCIFUL.

THE GOSPEL:

"Jesus said to his disciples: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

“Stop judging and you will not be judged.

"Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.

"Forgive and you will be forgiven.

"Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap.

"For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." (Luke 6: 36 - 38).

Monday 17th March 2025, in the 2nd Week of Lent is the feast of St Patrick, Bishop and Missionary.

St Patrick lived between 389 and  461. His nationality is British-Irish. St Patrick was a Bishop and a great Missionary. He is the Patron saint of Ireland and Nigeria.

St Patrick teaches us that persistence in prayer breaks resistance. St Patrick had a great desire to become a priest. He was opposed by powerful clerics because he was considered too old and not able to withstand the rigors of the studies involved. Convinced by the intensity of his desire to become a priest, he persisted. Result: St Patrick is one of the most powerful priests that ascended the Altar of God. Not just that, St Patrick was consecrated the Bishop of all Ireland.

The Gospel today speaks of mercy.

The message of mercy can never be overstated. “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."

What is mercy?

Mercy is not judging, not criticizing, not condemning anyone. Mercy is forgiving every offense as we have been forgiven. Mercy is sharing your bread with the hungry. Mercy is generosity. Mercy is being like God, acting like God.

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. The ABC of Mercy helps us to remember how to do this.

A - Ask for mercy.

B - Be merciful.

C - Completely trust Jesus for mercy.

"I will not abandon or forsake you. I am faithful. I have chosen you and you are Mine. Why do you doubt My love for you? Have I not given you signs of My favour? Have I not shown you that My mercy has prepared for you a future full of hope? Did I not promise you years of happiness, of holiness, and of peace? My blessing is upon you and the designs of My Heart are about to unfold for you. You have only to trust Me. Believe that I will keep you as the apple of My eye." (IN SINU JESU, Thursday, February 14, 2008).

Ask St Joseph whom we honor in March to obtain for you the grace to forgive all your enemies.

St Joseph is the man chosen by God to be the foster father and guardian of Jesus.
