“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1: 20 - 21).
Today is the Solemnity of St Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a feast day in Lent. Who is St Joseph and why does he matter in salvation history?
Church tradition has attributed to St Joseph the following attributes:
+ Patron of the Church.
+ Patron of a happy death (CCC 1014).
+ Patron of workers.
+ Foster father of Jesus.
+ Great man of faith.
"Behold a faithful and prudent steward, whom the Lord set over his household." (Cf Luke 12: 42).
"Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that by Saint Joseph’s intercession
your Church may constantly watch over the unfolding of the mysteries of human salvation, whose beginnings you entrusted to his faithful care.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever." (Collect on the feast of St Joseph).
