ENDURE YOUR TRIALS AS DISCIPLINE FROM GOD YOUR FATHER.
"Brothers and sisters, You have forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as children:
“My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.” Endure your trials as “discipline”; God treats you as sons. For what “son” is there whom his father does not discipline? At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.
"So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed." (Hebrews 12: 5 - 7, 11 - 13).
Sunday August 21st of the 21st week of Ordinary Time.
My paper castle was tumbling right and left when I heard our Scripture for today (2nd Reading) on the 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time many years ago. It was sweet music to my ears. I was happy because I knew for sure that somebody was aware of where I was and what I was suffering.
Whatever trial you may be going through at the moment, our Scripture for today is certainly a word of knowledge and comfort. A sage said: "Correct thought is the key to correct action." This is the great gift God bestows on us in His word: "The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword." (Hebrews 4: 12).
David is happy because the Lord disciplines him. The Apostle James writes: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." (James 1: 2 - 4).
"Those whom the Lord loves, He disciplines."
